Reflection on Oral Presentation

On 31st October, Monday marked the last of the oral presentations that I am required to do for the module. Overall, I felt that my team did a great job in presenting our ideas to the class, but there were still some areas which we were lacking in that ought to be improved.

In terms of the preparation, I felt that the team has definitely placed a lot of effort on it. As everyone has written on different portions of the proposal, the team made it a point to ensure that the parts that we were handling for the presentation is completely different from the portions that we have written for the proposal. This is to ensure that all of us would get a thorough understanding on all parts of the proposal, making us better prepared for the question and answer section of the presentation.
The team has also met up before the actual presentation to carry out a rehearsal. This was extremely important as it helps the members of the team to familiarize themselves with the slides, as well as providing a time for the team to comment and evaluate on individual members’ presentation skills.
As for the delivery for my part of the presentation, I thought that I did fine in terms of delivery and content. However, one flaw of mine was the pace – I was speaking too fast. The pace at which I speak has been a troubling issue to me since a long time ago, and I admit that I do have some troubles with overcoming this problem. A more conscious effort on my part to slow down my pace is necessary for my presentation skills to become better.
Concerning the slides, the team has decided to make use of Prezi as the platform for our presentation. Prezi is a great interface for presentation as not only is it more uncommonly used (as most would choose to use Microsoft Powerpoint), it also provides good visual effects with the zooming function. The team is able to effectively emphasize on our points by zooming in on the key ideas, which helps to better effectively persuade the audience.
To end off, it has been enjoyable working with the team and I think that all of us should give ourselves a pat on our shoulders for the job well done! :D

  1. I think your team did a very good presentation. It is clear that you guys did alot of preparatory work in terms of rehearsing the presentation, the transition from one speaker to the next and all of you guys know each other's parts very well:)

Sher Lynn also has the same problem as you in that she tends to speak very fast when she presents. But she manage to overcome this problem by pausing at some intervals during her speech. Perhaps you can do so as well;)

But a good presentation from you nonetheless. Thumbs up!

  2. Hello fiona!

I thought you have always been super articulate that presenting is just like a stroll down the park for you! :) And as a fast speaker myself, I have been struggling with this problem for the longest time! Especially when I get excited about something, I have the tendency to just blurt everything out, sort of like a verbal diarrhoea! I too wonder if there are plausible ways of changing that.

One more thing, I thought the conscious effort to make sure that you guys presented a different part from one compile was a really smart way of getting to know the proposal true and true! :)

I saw the first draft of the proposal and by the time we saw the presentation, I thought alot of effort has been put in to refine the details of the proposal! :)

On a more personal note, I really like your presentation style and the way you carry yourself when you talk in front of the crowd, you sort of inject some "fiona-icity" (HAHA) as you present! :)

SO yes, KUDOS TO YOU! It has been a pleasure having you in the same class, makes me wanna improve my oral presentation skills and be as fluent as you! :) All the best for finals!!

  4. Great job team-mate! All thanks to you, Susan and yifan for finishing up the proposal. I guess you did the most with all the compiling and editing. I feel so ashamed!!

Anyway, I feel that you may speak slightly faster, but your sophistication downplayed the speed issue and still commanded the audiences' attention. Besides, your ideal job is to be a DJ, and that level of energy in the way you speak is so suitable to be one.

  5. Even though the pace is a bit fast for the presentation, I'm really like the way you address which contains great enthusiasm. And that enable to catch listeners' attention, to inspire the interest and to convince our audiences:)

  6. Hello Fiona!

I really admire how you fluent you are! :)

I think your pace was rather alright during the mock presentation, but you went back to your fast mode again on the final presentation. >.<
However, this is "compensated" by your clear dictation and eloquence.

Are you taking any concrete steps towards your DJ goal? I hope you are! You totally suit to be one and SHOULD BE ONE! ;D

    All the best! ^^
